Storage Tips

Storage Tips

1. Plan Ahead

  • Make a list of everything you’ll store, along with approximate item sizes.
  • Stock up on supplies: sturdy boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, sealing tape, and markers. Don’t forget furniture covers and shelving if needed.
  • Many facilities offer these supplies for purchase on-site.

2. Use Uniform-Size Boxes

  • Choose boxes that are all the same size so they stack neatly.
  • Pack them tightly—but avoid bulging cartons or under-filled ones (they collapse easily).
  • Use filler (newsprint, towels, blankets) to fill empty space inside boxes.
  • Seal all boxes well with tape.

3. Handle Heavy Items Wisely

  • Keep the weight of any single box under 30 lbs to make handling easier and safer.

4. Label Everything Clearly

  • Mark boxes with contents—“kitchen,” “books,” “pictures,” etc.
  • Keep a master list or take photos of what’s in each box so you can reference them later.
  • Be sure to mark fragile boxes clearly.

5. Clean & Prep Appliances

  • Clean and dry appliances before storing (especially refrigerators and washers).
  • Secure movable parts. Tape doors shut during transport, but leave them slightly open inside the unit to avoid mold and mildew.

6. Protect Bed Frames, Mattresses, & Upholstered Furniture

  • Tape bed rails together and label the parts.
  • Use plastic or waterproof covers for mattresses.
  • Keep slipcovers on upholstered chairs and protect legs with wrapping.

7. Store Books & Collectibles Properly

  • Line containers with plastic to protect against moisture.
  • Fill any empty spaces with packing paper so contents don’t shift.
  • Pack books flat to safeguard their spines.

8. Use Bureau Drawers for Fragile & Small Items

  • Leave fragile items in dresser or bureau drawers—pad around them with clothing or towels.
  • Folded items, clothing, and towels make excellent padding.

9. Pack Dishes, Glassware & Lamps Carefully

  • Wrap each item individually using paper or bubble wrap.
  • For dishes, add cushioning at the bottom and top of the box; plates are best stored on edge.
  • Lamps and lampshades also need individual boxes with plenty of padding.

10. Utilize Wardrobe Boxes for Hanging Clothes

  • Hang dresses, coats, or other hanging garments to avoid creasing.
  • Shoes and folded items can fit in the bottom of the wardrobe box.
  • Add mothballs or cedar chips to protect against pests if storing long-term.
